BERGER David

Product Description:

Over the past century, the liturgy has been a flashpoint of theological interest. Few scholars have examined what St. Thomas has to say about the liturgy. In this concise volume, David Berger, a member of the Pontifical Academy of St. Thomas, approaches this theme in accord with Cardinal Ratzinger's recent call for a "reform of the reform."

Drawing together St. Thomas's life and theology, Berger illumines the role in St. Thomas's theology of his youthful training at Monte Cassino and his devotion to the Eucharist. Rightly renowned for his articulation of the doctrine of transubstantiation, St. Thomas deserves also to be regarded as master of liturgics. As Berger shows, St. Thomas provides a supremely incarnational view of the Christian liturgy, in which man, as a body-soul unity, is drawn with the angels into Christ's redemptive sacrifice.

BOBIK Joseph

Product Description:

This book does some philosophy of religion. It takes as its point of departure what Aquinas calls divine truth (veritas divina), i.e., the collection of truths revealed to man by God. And it tries to make as clear as possible what Aquinas says about some of these revealed truths. Then it agrees or disagrees with what he says, as needed, for reasons of various sorts, whether philosophical, theological, scientific, historical, etc. – of whatever sort, just so long as they are relevant and cogent; to do these things as well as possible, if only in a small way – pro nostro modulo, as Aquinas puts it, in describing what he intends to do as the author of the Summa Contra Gentiles. Veritas Divina includes not only certain truths which are attainable by natural reason, like truths about certain aspects of the virtue of religion, of prayer, of pain and suffering, of friendship, of death; but also certain truths which are not attainable by natural reason, like truths about ! the Trinity, the Incarnation, the Eucharist, Purgatory, Heaven, Hell.

CONTINGENCY AND FORTUNE IN AQUINAS'S ETH

ISBN:

Author:
BOWLIN John
Quantity In Stock:

Binding:
Hardcover
Pages:

Product Description:

Bowlin argues that the strength of Aquinas' moral theology is his assumption about our common lot: the good we desire is difficult to know and to will, particularly because of contingencies of various kinds--within ourselves, in the ends and objects we pursue, and in the circumstances of choice. Since contingencies are fortune's effects, Aquinas insists that fortune makes good choice difficult. Bowlin explores Aquinas' treatment of virtue, agency, and happiness in this context, and places him more precisely in the history of ethics, among Aristotle, Augustine, and the Stoics.

Product Description:

Stephen Brock examines the relation between conduct and physical action, or between the 'will' and the real events which it effects in the world, through the works of Thomas Aquinas.Few thinkers have devoted more attention to this topic than Thomas, who has influenced mainstream modern analytic philosophy through (among others) G. E. M. Anscombe, Anthony Kenny, Roderick Chisolm and the late Alan Donagan.Demonstrating an exhaustive knowledge of Thomas and of contemporary theories of action, Professor Brock provides a new interpretation of Thomas' thought on human action and exposes the incoherence of theories which place an exclusive emphasis on the morality of subjective intention>
